The American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) has released its latest Division III Poll and the Rensselaer football team has been ranked 22nd. This is the first time this season Rensselaer has been ranked by the coaches.
The Engineers are off to a 6-0 start for the second straight season and the fifth time in head coach Joe King’s 20-year tenure. The team currently sits in first place in the Liberty League with a 4-0 record. At the time of the ranking (Oct. 21), they led the league in several categories, including scoring offense (31.4 points per game), scoring defense (13.8 points allowed per game), pass offense (275.2 yards per game), kickoff returns (25.8 yards per return), turnover margin (+1.6 per game), and sacks against (4).
Individually for Rensselaer, which is ranked 25th in the latest D3Football.com Poll, senior quarterback Jimmy Robertson is first in the league in passing yards per game (269.4), total offense (299.8), and passing efficiency (155.3).
Wide receivers Patrick McCarthy and Eren Savasli are first and second, respectively, in receptions per game. McCarthy, a sophomore, averages 8.00 per contest while Savasli, a senior, has a 6.40 average. McCarthy also ranks first in kick return average (25.8 yards per return) and all-purpose yards (161.4). Savasli is first in receiving yards per game (119.2).
Others listed atop Liberty League statistical categories are junior Mike Fil in punt return average (11.2 yards per return), junior Peter Nilson in scoring among kickers (5.4 points per game), and defensive back Justin Foglia, a junior who has forced a league-high 0.60 fumbles per game.
The Engineers are back home on ’86 Field Saturday, Nov. 1, to host Union in the Dutchman Shoes Trophy Game. The game begins at 1 p.m. and can be heard live on WRPI, 91.5 FM, and www.wrpi.org.
In other athletics news, the 2008 Liberty League Fall All-Academic Team has been announced and 86 Rensselaer student-athletes have been honored. Student-athletes must have at least sophomore athletic and academic standing with a minimum grade point average of 3.20 to be selected. The fall sports include men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey, football, men’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, and women’s tennis.
