Rensselaer Alumni Association 2008 Award Winners
Rensselaer’s Formula SAE team had a successful 2008 race season, with a top-10 finish in June and another strong showing in May.

The RPI team placed ninth out of 81 international teams that competed in late June at the 2008 Formula SAE West at the Auto Club Speedway of Southern California in Fontana, Calif., after placing 16th out of 120 at the SAE event in mid-May at the Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Mich.

“The team is extremely pleased with our performance and we believe that our top-10 finish continues to reinforce Rensselaer’s reputation in the largest collegiate engineering competition in the world,” said Rensselaer Formula SAE business manager Matthew Gorini ’09.

The annual competition, which dates back to 1978, is sponsored by the Society of Automotive Engineers and pits creative collegiate minds against each other to design, construct and race a prototype formula race car. Representatives from General Motors, Ford, Chrysler, and other auto companies judge the competition.

In California, the Rensselaer team’s ninth place overall rank was a composite of their performance in several different categories. Individual event rankings include second place for acceleration, fourth place for sales presentation, 10th for design, and a top-10 finish in the 22-kilometer endurance event.

At the earlier competition in Michigan, the team placed third in the acceleration event, 10th in design, and 12th place in sales presentation. Freshman Janelle Farkas ’11 delivered the sales presentations at both competitions.

Under the tutelage of faculty adviser Euan Somerscales, a MANE emeritus professor, and team leader Levi Porter ’08, the Rensselaer SAE Team secured its second top-10 showing in two years. In 2007, the team placed ninth in Michigan and 17th in California.
