Inside Rensselaer, July 7, 2008: Rensselaer Relay for Life Update

Rensselaer hosted its third annual Relay for Life event on April 25-26 on the ’86 Field. Created by the American Cancer Society (ACS), the overnight event provides family, friends, and members of the community with an opportunity to celebrate those who have survived cancer, to remember those who have lost their battle to the disease, and to fight back.

To date, members of the Rensselaer Greek Life community, along with student athletes and others from the Rensselaer community, have joined together to raise more than $90,000 (and counting) for cancer research. The committee hopes to reach its goal of $130,000 by the end of August.

“Despite the demands of a rigorous academic schedule, many students have carved out time to participate in a variety of community service initiatives at Rensselaer and beyond,” said Eddie Ade Knowles, vice president for student life.

“The tradition of community service by student organizations at Rensselaer is as old as the Institute itself.

Volunteerism has always been central to Greek life as well as a range of student service groups. Students are involved from the moment they arrive on campus and throughout their time at the Institute. Relay for Life is the largest student-led initiative dedicated to raising cancer awareness and making a difference in our global community and beyond.”

The overnight event provides family, friends, and members of the community with an opportunity to celebrate those who have survived cancer, to remember those who have lost their battle to the disease, and to fight back.

More than 1,300 Rensselaer students, faculty, staff, their families, and members of the surrounding community participated in the event. Throughout the night, participating teams walked, jogged, and/or ran laps around the field in an effort to raise cancer awareness, raise funds, and celebrate survivorship.
