Michael Shur To Receive IEEE Prize Paper Award
The IEEE has named Michael Shur, the Patricia W. and C. Sheldon Roberts ’48 Professor of Solid State Electronics in the Department of Electrical, Computer, and Systems Engineering at Rensselaer, a recipient of its 2007 Donald G. Fink Prize Paper Award for a paper he co-wrote titled “Solid-State Lighting: Towards Superior Illumination.” Shur wrote the paper with Arturas Zukauskas, professor in the department of semiconductor physics at Vilnius University in Lithuania. The co-authors are credited with exploring the advantages of white lamps based on light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and paving the way for the achievement of superior quality of lighting offered by these solid-state sources. The IEEE is the world’s leading professional association for the advancement of technology.

Sponsored by the IEEE Life Members Committee, the award is given for an outstanding survey, review, or tutorial paper published in any of the more than 100 IEEE Transactions, IEEE journals, IEEE magazines, or IEEE Proceedings. It will be presented to Shur and Zukauskas on Dec. 11 at the 2007 IEEE International Electron Devices Meeting in Washington, D.C.

Shur and Zukauskas’ paper surveyed the history of lighting, discussed the benefits of solid-state lighting technologies, and compared the approach of generating white light from solid-state phosphor LEDs with using multichip lamps comprised of colored LEDs.

Solid-state phosphor LEDs are considered a solid-state replacement of fluorescent tubes, and multichip lamps comprised of colored LEDs are thought to offer many new advantages such as chromaticity control, better light quality, and higher efficiency.
