Football Staff Honored; King a Finalist for Coach of the Year
Head football coach Joe King and his assistant coaches have been named the Coaching Staff of the Year in the Liberty League. The award was voted on by the league’s eight head coaches.

King led the Engineers to an 8-1 overall record and a 6-1 league mark, capturing the Liberty League Championship. Rensselaer earned the conference’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament, garnering the fourth seed. During the regular season, which saw the Engineers win their first seven games — including both trophy games — Rensselaer averaged 29.0 points and 403.3 yards per contest. The Engineers averaged 148.8 yards rushing and 254.6 yards passing.

Among the coaches on the staff are Pat DelMonaco, the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach, and Chad Martinovich, the defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach. Others include John Barber (running backs), Dan Cole (quarterbacks), Pete Costanza (defensive backs), Will Headen (linebackers), Kevin King (linebackers), Steve Kremer (tight ends), John Maletta (running backs), Justin Pollizi (defensive backs), Chris Sapp (wide receivers), Bob Schoonmaker (offensive line), and Al Washington (defensive line).

King also has been named a Division III finalist for the 2007 Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award. The award, which is presented with the support of the National Football Foundation and the College Football Hall of Fame, celebrates responsible coaching and a commitment to excellence both on and off the field.

King is one of five finalists in all of Division III. Should the award be presented to King, he will receive $50,000 for his favorite charities, $20,000 for Rensselaer’s alumni association, a personal trophy, and recognition in a permanent Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year exhibit at the College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend, Ind. He will also be profiled on an ABC/ESPN special on Dec. 29 at 5:30 p.m.

The deadline for fan voting is December 15. Go to www.coachoftheyear.com to cast your vote for King.
