Construction is under way for the first phase of the $114 million East Campus Athletic Village, located behind the Houston Field House. The most extensive athletic construction project in the Institute’s history, the new athletic village will improve dramatically campus athletic facilities, expand athletic opportunities, and enhance the overall student experience at Rensselaer. The project will involve two phases. Phase 1 will include a stadium, an arena, and enhancements to the Houston Field House. Phase 2 will feature an indoor pool, outdoor tennis courts, and an indoor sports facility complete with a track and tennis courts.
The photo at right shows the tall concrete walls that are foundations for the southeast corner of the basketball arena. This part of the building will be buried into the hillside, according to Barbara Nelson, campus planning and facilities design. The green storage container (near the center of the photo) is sitting on center court of the basketball arena. In the far background is the newly completed synthetic turf field designed for field hockey and women’s lacrosse.
