Student-Athletes Honored
As Rensselaer’s fall sports teams conclude their seasons, many of the student-athletes are being honored with year-end awards and recognition.

The Liberty League has recognized three Rensselaer student-athletes with year-end field hockey awards. Michelle Clemente, Lisa Pak, and Michelle Roy were all named to the Second Team. The field hockey team, coached by Bridget LaNoir, finished the 2007 season with a 5-11 record, including a 2-5 Liberty League mark.

The Liberty League also has recognized three Rensselaer student-athletes with year-end women’s soccer awards. Sarah Hinz, Judy Kastner, and Kristy Kolb were all recognized as Honorable Mention selections for the 2007 season. The women’s soccer team, led by Eric Miller, finished with a 6-10-2 record, and went 1-6-0 in Liberty League play.

Meanwhile, men’s soccer team members Gary Sroka and Tim Wisner have been selected to the 2007 District 1 College Division Men’s Soccer All-Academic Teams as chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Sroka was named to the Second Team while Wisner garnered Third Team recognition. The men’s soccer team won the ECAC Championship with a 2-1 victory over Union College in the 2007 Division III ECAC Upstate Tournament. The Red Hawks, who earned their second ECAC title in three years, concluded their season with a 10-6-4 record.

On the gridiron, five Rensselaer student-athletes have been selected to the 2007 ESPN The Magazine District 1 College Division Football All-Academic First Team, as chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America. As first team honorees, Tim Acker, Nick Casale, Dave Dillen, Brendan McGowan, and Jimmy Robertson are now eligible for National Academic All-America consideration. Earning Second Team honors was Tom Rayhill.

The Liberty League has tabbed 12 student-athletes from the football team with All-League honors. Four players were named to the First Team, six earned Second Team honors, and two were Honorable Mentions. Voting was done by the league’s eight head coaches. Named to the First Team were wide receiver Brendan McGowan, offensive lineman Jasmin Ibric, defensive lineman James McLaughlin, and linebacker Anthony Casale. Quarterback Jimmy Robertson, defensive linemen Nick Casale and Khaly Merot, linebacker Tom Rayhill, and defensive backs Tim Acker and John Tesiero were selected for the Second Team. Acker was also recognized as the Second Team return specialist. Offensive lineman Dave Dillen and defensive back Joe Albano were Honorable Mention selections
