Faculty Governance Update
As part of the ongoing review of faculty govern-ance requested by the Rensselaer Board of Trustees, Provost Robert Palazzo has consulted with faculty members and the academic deans to consider appropriate mechanisms to establish a Faculty Governance Review Committee. In order to assure the broadest possible faculty participation in this process, and to assure that all members of the Faculty Governance Review Committee are endorsed by both the faculty and the administration, a faculty-based approach to establishing an 11-member committee will be used.

In a letter to the faculty Aug. 29, Palazzo said that tenured and tenure-track faculty candidates for service on the Faculty Governance Review Committee will be selected by a vote of tenured and tenure-track faculty at the department and program levels for each school.

The committee will be selected using the following process:

1) Deans of the schools of Engineering, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Science will work with departments to identify one candidate from each department within their respective schools to serve as nominees. Each department will forward one nominee to the dean of the school. All tenured and tenure-track faculty from each individual department are requested to participate in discussions and vote to identify suitable candidates at the departmental level.

2) Deans of the schools of Architecture and the Lally School of Management & Technology will work with their program groups to identify appropriate candidates. All tenured and tenure-track faculty are requested to participate in the identification of and vote for suitable candidates.

3) Within each school, the names of nominees will be submitted to the respective deans for review.

4) Deans will forward a minimum of four candidates from each school to the provost for consideration.

5) The provost will select two candidates from each school to serve on the Faculty Governance Review Committee, for a total of 10.

6) The provost will select one additional member of the tenured and tenure-track faculty to chair the committee, bringing the total committee membership to 11.

7) The provost will submit the full composition of the committee to the president for final approval.

Provost Palazzo has asked the deans to oversee this process for their schools, work with respective department heads and relevant leadership as necessary, and submit the names of school candidates to the Provost’s Office by Sept. 14.

“In this way, I believe we will begin the broadest possible participation in the faculty governance review process,” Palazzo said in the Aug. 29 letter. “I look forward to your participation in this important discussion and to the continued development of clarity for responsibility and accountability of faculty in academic governance, while enhancing unity among the faculty at Rensselaer. Thank you for your thoughtfulness, your support, and your participation.”
