The Core Recruitment Committee has been formed to conduct a national search for a new director of athletics at Rensselaer. The goal is to have the position filled by the calendar year-end.

According to Vice President for Student Life Eddie Ade Knowles, “Seventy percent of undergraduate students at Rensselaer are engaged in athletics, and our student-athletes excel both in the game and in the classroom. I am certain the Core Recruitment Committee will identify outstanding candidates for this important position, and that the Institute will continue to elevate and increase athletic opportunities for students.”

The Core Recruitment Committee, which is led by Rick Hartt ’70, director of the Rensselaer Union, includes: Sharon Kunkel, registrar; Karen Long, director of undergraduate admissions; Lealon Martin, assistant professor of chemical and biological engineering; Eileen McLoughlin, director of budget and financial planning; Jeff Schanz, director of alumni relations and annual giving; Erik Swanson, president of the Union; and Jeff Trinkle, professor and head of computer science.

Kevin Beattie, sports information director for Rensselaer, has been named acting director of athletics. Beattie has served as sports information director at Rensselaer since 1998, handling media relations for the Institute’s varsity athletic teams, and acting as the main liaison between the athletic department and members of the local, regional, and national media. He replaces Ken Ralph, who served as director since 2002 and is now athletic director at Colorado College. During his time at Rensselaer, Ralph oversaw the Institute’s 23 NCAA intercollegiate varsity teams — 11 of which are women’s — and three junior varsity squads, involving nearly 600 students.
