Resolution Of The Board Of Trustees Of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
Regarding Faculty Governance

Whereas, the Board of Trustees resolved at its meeting of December 9, 2006 to define the faculty of Rensselaer as active tenured and tenure track faculty, and by implication, to redefine the role of the entire instructional staff at Rensselaer; and

Whereas the Provost, Dr. Robert Palazzo, has, on July 27, 2007 proposed to the President a process to implement said resolution of the Board regarding the definition of faculty, as well as to analyze and resolve during such process concomitant issues of faculty shared governance; and

Whereas the President has approved the proposed process; and

Whereas, during the time of such process the current role of the Faculty Senate at Rensselaer as set forth in its constitution which was approved by the Board and remains subject to such continuing approval, shall be temporarily supplanted with replacement processes or methodologies;

Now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED the Board of Trustees of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute hereby endorses the plan proposed by the Provost as approved by the President to: review faculty shared governance at Rensselaer in order to comply with the directive of this Board as expressed by its December 2006 resolution; examine broader issues of and models for faculty shared governance at Rensselaer; and, clarify the respective roles of all instructional staff at Rensselaer; and

Be it further resolved, that during such review, a state of transitional faculty governance shall prevail at Rensselaer during which time those members of key faculty advisory groups who served during the 2006-2007 academic year, such as the Faculty Committee on Promotion and Tenure [referred to as FCPT] and such other committees as set forth in said Faculty Senate Constitution, as well as those individuals who served during that time as faculty representatives to various committees of this Board, may have their terms of office extended for the duration of such transition or may have replacements to such committees as nominated from the faculty by the Provost with Presidential approval; and

Be it further resolved, that the opinions or recommendations of such faculty committees which are transmitted to the Board via the President of Rensselaer, shall be deemed by the Board to reflect the representative opinion and views of the faculty of Rensselaer; and

Be it further resolved, that such faculty representatives to the various committees of this Board shall be viewed as valid representatives of the faculty of Rensselaer.
