Extending the university’s reach beyond the borders of its campusapplying our talent and resources to the world around usis a clear extension of Rensselaer’s mission to apply knowledge to the common purposes of life.
Rensselaer is fast approaching a new level of national and international prominence as a top-tier technological research university.
Our international reputation and global reach depend upon the excellence of all that we do on campus, and that excellence is fostered in no small measure by the university’s deep connection to its surroundings.
As it pursues global leadership in the 21st century, Rensselaer reaffirms its commitment to the communities that have nurtured the university since its founding in 1824.
Extending the university’s reach beyond the borders of its campusapplying our talent and resources to the world around usis a clear extension of Rensselaer’s mission to apply knowledge to the common purposes of life. Nowhere is that more important than in our home community.
As a citizen of Troy, N.Y., the greater Capital District region, and the Hartford, Conn., metropolitan area, the university is keenly aware of its responsibilities to its nearest neighbors and of the power of collaborative approaches to shared goals. We believe that our greatness is inextricably linked to the vitality of the regions in which Rensselaer is located.
Rensselaer’s president, Shirley Ann Jackson, underscores the importance of active partnership with the larger community in the term “communiversity”a vision of the way institutions of higher learning and the cities, towns, and counties that serve as their homes can and should work together to ensure the viability and vibrancy of their shared communities.
When educational institutions and their host municipalities collaborate to improve the community’s quality of life, everyone benefits. The community has much to gain from tapping into the university’s resources and expertise. The community’s enhanced vitality, in turn, helps draw top students and faculty to the university and offers myriad opportunities for connecting learning with real-world challenges and opportunities.
Renssealer hosts a free community street festival in October open to the general public, along with Rensselaer students, faculty, and staff. This annual festival brings together entertainers, food vendors, crafters, and children's activities for a celebration of Fall.
Community Service Days
Community Service Days are regular opportunities for Rensselaer students, alumni, faculty and staff to help out local community organizations. Since Spring 1999, Rensselaer volunteers have contributed thousands of hours at neighborhood parks, museums, and social service organizations.
