Installing Matlab - Mathworks confirmed
a bug in the Matlab 2008a installer which can affect
using the toolboxes. The workaround (a manual overwriting
of the license file) is now part of the instructions -
see step 16 for Windows. This should not affect MAC/Linux
users, but if you aren't able to use any licensed
toolbox, then you would need to overwrite the license
file, too.

Malicious False Emails Circulating
Again! You may have received an email
message from a group identifying itself as THE RPI
HELPDESK TEAM or the RPI SUPPORT TEAM. This message asks
you to confirm your email account by providing your
RCSID, your password, and your date of birth.
This is a phishing SCAM aimed at obtaining personal
information, which would give unauthorized persons access
to Rensselaer computing resources, using your user name
and password.

Suspicious e-mail? Suspicious attachment? Be
aware! Never give out personal information in a
reply to an e-mail message. For example, the Internal
Revenue Service has issued several recent consumer
warnings on the fraudulent use of the IRS name or logo in
an effort to gain access to consumers’ financial
information. And similarly, don't open an attachment
unless you know the sender and are expecting it.

If you have a T60 or T43p laptop, you can
re-image your laptop with Microsoft Windows Vista
Ultimate. We recommend that you do a clean
install, rather than an upgrade to Vista.
Since each Vista install requires a unique product
key, before re-imaging you must purchase the media (which
comes with a unique code) from the Rensselaer Campus
Computer Store for $20. You must present the SIS page
that shows your laptop status as being a participant in
the Mobile Computing Program. After you have purchased the
media and code, come to the Help Desk to re-image your
laptop. This image is only a base image and includes
Office 2007.
More information about re-imaging.
