Julie Stenken
Associate Professor
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
I am a native Buckeye from the river city of Cincinnati. However, I have lived in New York State three different times during my life. These stints include living in Rochester as a child, living and working at Eastman Kodak Corp as a co-op student while studying chemistry at the University of Akron, and living and working in The Capital District.
I received my B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Akron and then moved out 'west' to the University of Kansas to work on a Ph.D. in Bioanalytical Chemistry with Craig Lunte. While working as a PhD student, I took "sabbatical" with a Fulbright Fellowship and studied at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden in the Department of Clinical Pharmacology with Lars Stċhle.
After finishing my PhD, I moved on to the University of Kansas Medical Center, which is located in Kansas City approximately 30 miles east of Lawrence. In August 1996, I moved to Troy to become an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
My research interests include microdialysis and separations. We are particularly interested in new applications of in vivo microdialysis sampling. Please view my current list of publications. You can also view an update of current projects in the laboratory. I am also creating a new page of links to my friends and family. You can also view where my former students are presently working/studying.
I have taught many different analytical chemistry courses at RPI. These courses have included introductory courses for majors and non-majors.
When I am not mathematically modeling transport to cylindrical microdialysis probes, I am participating in other activities such as: Running, Bicycling, Golf, Cross-Country Skiing and Orienteering (Map and Compass work). Orienteering is a Class 'C' Olympic sport.
I have run in some of the largest races in the world while living in Sweden including the Lidingö Loppet (15K), which is the world's largest cross-country race with more than 30,000 participants and the Göteborg Varvet (21K)(Gothenburg half-marathon). In the US, the largest race that I have participated in is the Utica Boilermaker a 15 K race held in July in Utica, NY. This race is special because you get served Saranac beer at the finish.
