Multiples Scales Asymptotics and Homogenization
[Abstract]
Many natural phenomena can be modeled using non linear equations. In the
case where the non linearity is weak (ie the non linear term has a small
parameter as its coefficient) one can approach the solution to these equations
using asymptotic expansions. However complications arise when the weak non
linearity sets up multiple time and/or space scales at long times. Method of
Multiple Scales is a mathematical technique for approaching such
problems. Homogenization theory is a variant of MMTS. I will briefly
illustrate the methods with simple examples and point out open issues
in both MMTS and Homogenization.
